The Rolle of Seyncte Bartlemeweis Priorie
IN the year of oure Lorde Christe M.CC.OV. Syr Gauwyne de
Rockeshal and Syre John de Toedmage founded thys Priorie to
the honore of Seyncte Bartholomewe. Itte lyeth on the Syde of
St. Mychaelis Hylle which parte there lyeinge is the Priourie for
Twentie Austinians and Princypall havynge a longe Courte to 5
Froome Gate1 and the Arrowe Towers whych there bee. at the
Ende of the Courte ys the Lazar house2 for thilke who haveth
Leperous brennynges evryche Abbotte hydhertoe haeth encreased
thys house and meint Knyghtys and Citizens yeven Londes and
Moneys dhereto so dhatte even nowe the Place is fulle pleasaunde 10
to behoulde. The Yate is hyghe botte the modde maie ryse to the
annoie thereof on ytte of either Syde bee Imageryes the onne of
the Virgyne and Chylde and the other of a Warrioure stondeinge
thus3 enseemynge to bee Syr Johne de Barkelaie who ybuylden
the yate and yeven CC Markys and a Tenement thereto for the
Leperis, wythe C Markis by the yere to a Fadre of the blacke
Freerie to shrieve the Lepers and eke C markis in like tyme to
dresse and docke theyre Soris sayinge, Lette us cure bothe
Spryghte and Bodie. From the Gate we passe to the Acke-
Chambere, were attendethe fower mastoure Brothoure Surgeonis 20
under the behylte of the Austynian Freere, aforeseyde who haveth
the use of the Rolles which here bee yeven some bie Johann de
Berkeleie odhers by Sr. Walter de Derbie+ and Sr. John Viell4
Knightis and Citisons, and manie odhers. The beste Rollies be
these whyche Gilbertynes5 Rolle of Ypocratis: The same 25
Freares Boke of the Brennynge.6 Johann Stowe of the Cure of
Mormalles7 and the waterie Leperosie;8 The Rolle of the blacke
Mainger.9 F. Lewis a Wodefordes boke of ailes. The Booke of
Tymes and Phantasies.10 Christmass Maumeries11 bie F. Gualter 29
of Columbus, tho not by the same name. But the Conclusion of the
following Couplet of Chaucers would seem to mean something

in all fulle faire ande of good handiewurche. From the Lazarhouse 50
to the Priourie bee a longe Cloistered Courte wyth Windowes
theretoe. Inne the middest of this Cloyster bee the Bochorde with
fulle meinie Bokes dhereyn yeven bie dyvers wordie Knyghtis
whose Armoures bee theere to be seene. the Rolles bee fyrste.

In the Bochorde bee also peyncteynge and there be one onn the
Walle of Brystowe yn the reygn of W: Rouse as walled bie Geofreie
Byshoppe of Constance26 and a drawynge of Geofries Logge27
and Walls of the same,28 with dreynges of Roberte of Gloucester 75
his Castle, ande eke Dreeynges of a Spyre ande endeynge Botte
of a Chyrche29 the whyche I have ne seene butte ytte mote be
made for the Priourie Toure whyche haveth no Spyre30 to be
putte onne the samne the Spyre bee a qeynte Wurche, the Botte

of Cosier Wurche bie a nonne of Tuckesburye of the Life of
Seynte Barthelomew. From the Chapele to the Frierie is a smalle
Space. the Frierie haveth little therein that is of worthe botte 90
the Cellis be dernie and well ywroghten in Wood but the Buyldeynge
